Get Up, Stand Up - REvolution...

R-Evolution

This morning’s sermon was about history and injustice, it was a bit about me, and it was about music and how it affects the human heart.

A point that I shared:

"I focused on the words Revolution and Evolution which are very different words although it is just the letter “R” that divides them. Why would John Lennon call on both words in his song? Revolution is defined simply as a forcible overthrow of a government or social order, in favor of a new system. Evolution, on the other hand, is defined as the gradual development of something, especially from a simple to a more complex form. One is quick and forcible the other is gradual like meditation and/or education, but the goal of both is about bringing forth change."
The music that I shared this morning are in the attached playlist:

I have included the lyrics for your reading pleasure:

Revolution - The Beatles (John Lennon)

You say you want a revolution

Well, you know

We all want to change the world

You tell me that it's evolution

Well, you know

We all want to change the world

But when you talk about destruction

Don't you know that you can count me out (in)

Don't you know it's gonna be

All right?

Don't you know it's gonna be (all right)

You say you got a real solution

Well, you know

We'd all love to see the plan

You ask me for a contribution

Well, you know

We're all doing what we can

But if you want money for people with minds that hate

All I can tell you is brother you have to wait

Don't you know it's gonna be (all right)

You say you'll change the constitution

Well, you know

We'd all love to change your head

You tell me it's the institution

Well, you know

You better free your mind instead

But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao

You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow

Don't you know it's gonna be (all right)

Don't you know it's gonna be (all right)

The Times They are A Changin - Joan Baez and Bob Dylan

… Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin'
And you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'

… Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'

… Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
The battle outside ragin'
Will soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'

We Shall Overcome - African Spiritual (Pete Seeger cover)

We Shall Overcome, we shall overcome We shall overcome someday.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall overcome someday.

We are not afraid, we are not afraid, We are not afraid today.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, We shall overcome someday.

We are not alone, we are not alone We are not alone today
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, We are not alone today.

The truth will make us free, the truth will make us free, The truth will make us free someday.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall overcome someday.

We’ll walk hand in hand, we’ll walk hand in hand, We’ll walk hand in hand someday.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall overcome someday.

The Lord will see us through, the Lord will see us through, The Lord will see us through someday.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall overcome someday.

Black and white together, Black and white together, Black and white together someday.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall overcome someday.

We shall all be free, we shall all be free, We shall all be free someday.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall overcome someday.

The 1975 - The 1975 (Greta Thunberg)

We are right now in the beginning of a climate and ecological crisis
And  we need to call it what it is
An  emergency
We must acknowledge that we do not have the situation under control
And  that we don't have all the solutions yet
Unless those solutions mean that we simply stop doing certain things

We must admit that we are losing this battle
We have to acknowledge that the older generations have failed
All  political movements in their present form have failed
But Homo sapiens have not yet failed
Yes, we are failing, but there is still time to turn everything around
We can still fix this
We still have everything in our own hands
But unless we recognize the overall failures of our current systems
We most probably don't stand a chance

We are facing a disaster of unspoken sufferings for enormous amounts of people
And now is not the time for speaking politely or focusing on what we can or cannot say
Now is the time to speak clearly

Solving the climate crisis is the greatest and most complex challenge that Homo sapiens have ever faced
The main solution, however, is so simple that even a small child can understand it

We have to stop our emissions of greenhouse gases
And either we do that, or we don't
You say that nothing in life is black or white
But that is a lie, a very dangerous lie
Either we prevent a 1.5 degree of warming, or we don't
Either we avoid setting off that irreversible chain reaction beyond human control, or we don't
Either we choose to go on as our civilization, or we don't
That is as black or white as it gets
Because there are no grey areas when it comes to survival

Get Up, Stand Up - Bob Marley and The Wailers (co-written by Peter Tosh)

Get up, stand up (Oh yeah) stand up for your rights (Lord, Lord)
Get up, stand up (In the morning) stand up for your rights (Stand up for your rights)
Get up, stand up (Stand up for your life) stand up for your rights (Stand up for your life)
Get up, stand up (Stand up for your life) don't give up the fight!

Oh I say
Preacher man, don't tell me
Heaven is under the earth
I know you don't know
What life is really worth
It's not all that glitters is gold
'Alf the story has never been told
So now you see the light, eh
Stand up for your rights

Get up, stand up (Lord, Lord) stand up for your rights (What you got to give?)
Get up, stand up (For the life you live) don't give up the fight (Yeah)
Get up, stand up (Life is your right) stand up for your rights (Without life you can't fight)
Get up, stand up (Keep the good time calling) don't give up the fight (Oh Lord)

Most people think
Great god will come from the skies
Take away everything
And make everybody feel high
But if you know what life is worth
You will look for yours on earth
And now you see the light
You stand up for your rights jah

Get up, stand up! (Jah, jah!)
Stand up for your rights! (Oh-hoo!)
Get up, stand up! (Get up, stand up!)
Don't give up the fight! (Life is your right!)
Get up, stand up! (So we can't give up the fight!)
Stand up for your rights! (Lord, lord!)
Get up, stand up! (Keep on struggling on!)
Don't give up the fight! (Yeah!)

We sick an' tired of-a your ism-schism game
Dyin' 'n' goin' to heaven in-a Jesus' name, lord
We know when we understand
Almighty god is a living man
You can fool some people sometimes
But you can't fool all the people all the time
So now we see the light (What you gonna do?)
We gonna stand up for our rights! (Yeah, yeah, yeah!)

So you better
Get up, stand up! (In the morning! git it up!)
Stand up for your rights! (Stand up for our rights!)
Get up, stand up!
Don't give up the fight! (Don't give it up, don't give it up!)
Get up, stand up! (Get up, stand up!)
Stand up for your rights! (Get up, stand up!)
Get up, stand up! (Don't be a neighbour in your neighbourhood)
Don't give up the fight! (Get up, stand up!)
Get up, stand up! (I don't think that should be very good, Lord)
Stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up!
Don't give up the fight
